If you or a loved one is struggling with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health issues, Emerge is here for you. Our dual diagnosis treatment center in Atlanta, Georgia is here to help you begin your journey of recovery from co-occurring disorders.
Having a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder is known as co-occurring disorders. Also known as dual diagnosis, this is the medical way of saying someone is struggling with two distinct issues at the same time. For many people currently struggling with addiction, the physical effects of substance abuse aren’t their only concern. They’re also dealing with an untreated mental health disorder. Emerge provides a world-class co-occurring disorder treatment program that is ready to help you today.
Many studies have shown that addiction and mental health conditions often occur together due to many different reasons. When a person has both an addiction and a mental health condition, they are considered to have a dual diagnosis, sometimes called a co-occurring disorder. Seeking dual diagnosis treatment in Georgia means getting help for both concerns, which boosts your chances of recovering from both conditions and leading a normal life once again
Mental health and addiction are closely linked. Addiction is, in and of itself, considered a mental health condition because of the way that it affects brain function. Abusing substances makes your brain rely on them to release dopamine, the chemical responsible for making us feel happy and relaxed. This means that normally enjoyable activities no longer make you feel good, and instead, your brain craves drugs to release dopamine.
The longer you abuse substances, the more imbalanced your brain chemicals become, setting you up for additional mental health issues. If you have preexisting mental health conditions, drug abuse can make your symptoms worse over time. No matter which condition came first, or even if you aren’t sure which came first, continued drug abuse will only continue to harm your mental health.
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, nearly half of all people in the U.S. with a drug addiction also suffer from at least one mental health condition. People who are diagnosed with a mental health condition are twice as likely as the rest of the population to develop an addiction at some point in their lives.
A facility that offers dual diagnosis treatment in Georgia should be well-versed in treating both addiction and mental health conditions to guarantee the best possible outcomes for their clients. Emerge Healing Center is proud to offer a specialized dual diagnosis treatment program to our clients, which offers appropriate treatments to ensure our clients have the tools that they need to overcome both conditions.
While addiction and mental health issues may often go hand in hand, this doesn’t necessarily mean that one caused the other. There are a few different factors that influence a person’s likelihood of developing a dual diagnosis. Researchers have identified three different reasons why a person might develop this condition:
Addiction and Mental Health Issues Share Common Risk Factors
Both conditions can be influenced by your genetics, daily stress, and a history of physical or emotional trauma.
This happens when someone uses substances to try and self-medicate their mental health symptoms instead of seeking professional help. Some mental health disorders also influence your brain function in a way that makes it more likely for you to get addicted to drugs, even if you aren’t using them to self-medicate.
Drug abuse changes the way that your brain functions, making it more likely that you will develop certain conditions like depression and anxiety. This is especially true with marijuana (or any THC-containing substance), hallucinogens, and methamphetamine.
If you or a loved one is struggling with co-occurring disorders, then call Emerge Healing Center today. We can help you find which dual diagnosis treatment center in Atlanta is appropriate for your situation.
If you are worried that you or a loved one is suffering from a dual diagnosis issue, there are some signs you can look for before seeking dual diagnosis treatment in Georgia. While signs of addiction can vary based on what substance is being abused, the most common include:
The most important thing to remember about a dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring disorders is that it is imperative to be treated for both addiction and mental health symptoms. Only treating one fails to address the other issues, making it far more likely for a relapse. Dual diagnosis treatment in Georgia addresses both addiction and mental illness, giving you a path to recovery for both.
Most clients will begin treatment with medical detox, which helps get all of the substances out of your system so that you can focus on getting better. Next, you will undergo behavioral therapy, both individual and group sessions. This not only helps you to identify the root cause of your addiction but also gives you healthy coping mechanisms to overcome your drug use triggers. Group therapy may seem awkward for many, but it helps support recovery by giving you a place to talk about your experience and daily challenges, as well as celebrate milestones as you achieve them.

Eric Brumfield2024-09-06 Emerge is a different type of treatment facility. You are treated as an individual person, rather than just another patient through a revolving door. Starting with the owners, Rush and Joe, and all of the therapists and staff, they want to see you overcome the challenges you’re faced with. Addressing the underlying causes (trauma in my case) really helped me in my journey. One of the things that I enjoyed the most, and really worked for me, was the variety in treatments they offer. From typical group setting treatments, to yoga, breath work, hiking, mindfulness walks, etc. You don’t have to necessarily like each different approach (although I did), the variety helped so much compared to a past treatment facility I attended. Not doing the exact same thing every day, and focusing on things outside of just coursework / group work was game changing for me. I couldn’t recommend Emerge more if you are in need of help. I remember my first call with Rush (while I was still at another treatment facility) and it just felt different. I felt that he was honestly trying to understand what was going on in my life, and not just treating me as a stereotypical patient and gave me an honest response on if he felt Emerge could help me. They did! Nikul Patel2024-08-07 I’m very grateful for EHC and their team, they are without a doubt the best place for anyone dealing with trauma or addiction. With me relapsing they still took me back and helped me get better. Scott2024-08-07 I had an awesome experience here at Emerge. They treat you more as a person and less as merely a client/patient. I owe my sobriety and ability to work a 12-step program program to this place. Carey Carpenter2024-05-09 Emerge Healing Center has literally been with me every step of the way in my journey to recovery. The staff truly cares about your well-being and shows that in their actions inside and outside the facility. I even had a lapse in my insurance after my divorce and they continued to treat me despite that and for that, I am forever grateful. I would not be here without this place and I 100% recommend Emerge for anyone struggling with addiction and trauma. Craig Scott2024-05-08 I wish I could give Emerge 10 stars. The difference I can see in myself from when I got there versus now is incredible. The therapists are amazing and truly care about the clients over anything else. Kyle Young2024-05-08 I came to Emerge scared of next steps and walked out in freedom. I finally found peace in the trauma that I have experienced in my life. I was guided through this process with love, gentleness, and compassion. Energe is truly one of a kind and filled with therapists and staff that love their clients. I’d encourage anyone serious about recovery to seek out Emerge Healing Center. ryan quinn2024-05-08 Emerge Healing Center changed my life not only as a young professional therapist but as a human being. The founders, clinicians and other staff of this program have created something beyond special. The level of healing, transforming, care, unconditional love, none judgment, safety and knowledge that is poured into every person that walks through those doors will stay with me for a lifetime. This is not just another treatment center in Georgia. It is where miracles happen every day. Ii have worked many other places and nothing will ever compare to emerge healing center. My heart is forever grateful to this program and all those who have made it what is is today. Matt Combs2024-04-30 Emerge has literally changed my life!!!! I have unfortunately been to several treatment centers across the country and there is no where else that provides the care, love and support like Emerge. There is no other place that puts more effort into really addressing the trauma and addiction piece combined. Jessica Johnson is the best therapist I have ever met!!!! Her love, support, knowledge and desire to help is unlike anyone in this field. She treated me like I was the most important client to her and her energy and compassion is like no one else I have ever met. The breath work that Branton Box does along with his insight on our mind and how it affects me has created a positive shift in my life!!! Emerge is not some overcrowded IOP program where they just pile everyone in and you’re just a number. It is a very intimate setting with attention to personal care and growth. Rush Jolly and Joe Difabio have created an environment that has allowed me, for the first time in my life, the safe space I didn’t realize I needed in order to create a lasting change in my life. I was dying inside and paralyzed with fear and hopelessness when I arrived. I will now be leaving this place as a new man full of gratitude and love for myself and my life. I don’t have enough words to even express how much Emerge means to me. If you’re struggling with addiction and trauma there is nowhere else in the world I recommend except Emerge!!!! Thank you for saving my life!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Evan Hoopes2024-03-19 From my first call with Rush (owner), to my 1st in person convo with Joe (owner) and Jessica (Therapist)— it was very apparent God lead me to their doorstep. This place was life changing. (You get out what you put in “keep in mind) but it had everything you could ask for to help re-strengthen your mind and soul.. to healing from Trauma and more. All of the therapist are ridiculously passionate and deeply care about you opening your eyes and finding Freedom!! From breath work with Branton or Yoga days — it truly can feel like a retreat (but you have to want it!!) want that change, want that death of your current life to be born anew!! If that’s you, Emerge is the Golden Gates!!
